Itinerary: Aquarius - El Cortalet - Castelló - Pedret - Vilajuïga - Garriguella - Vilamaniscle - St. Quirze - Rabos - Delfiá - Peralada - Vilanova - Castelló - St. Pere Pescador - Aquarius
Surroundings: We start off on asphalted roads, pass St. Pere and take the detour to El Cortalet. From here we follow the G92 trail towards Castelló d'Emprúries. We continue on small roads mainly asphalted, through the wetlands and meadows of the natural park of the Aiguamolls, continuing for agricultural land, such as: pasture, rapeseed, corn, sunflower, cereal fields, etc. On the flat and up to Vilajuïga we pass through historical centers, such as Pedret, which is built around an old Romanesque church. From Vilajuïga we continue uphill, passing by the "Castell Quermance" through vineyards and pine forests towards Garriguella. With a constant ascent by asphalted road, we arrive at the turning point of the trip, the town of Vilamaniscle. The landscape changes from vineyards to pastures with donkeys, horses, sheep and the cows of Albera, an indigenous breed, which lives in the forest in total freedom. The flora is dominated by cork oaks, aromatic plants, wild roses, broom and blooming wild meadows and shrubs, depending on the season. From Vilamaniscle we go (almost) all downhill, and sometimes quite fast! In Rabós we leave the mountainous zone by a valley, and after a short slope we arrive at Delfiá, the beginning of the mountain range that cuts through the flat land of Alt Empordà. From here we continue downhill towards Peralada on the flat land, enjoying a spectacular panoramic view and also over the bay of Roses. The route leads us along the river Muga, crossing wetlands to Castelló and then, unlike the one-way trip, through the Aiguamolls natural park back to St. Pere and the Aquarius.
Highlights:Sighting of storks in the natural park almost guaranteed. Romantic village squares with their Romanesque churches. Menhir of “the Mas Neguer", prehistoric vestiges dated back from the Neolithic period. Arid landscape of Alberaberge, since ancient times home of human settlement.
Don`t forget: sun protection, sufficient drinks (water, isotonic drinks), energy food, comfortable clothing, spare clothing (when sweating or freezing), rainwear if needed and BEING IN A GOOD MOOD ;-)
